Recipes for 6-12 months old babies

After I uploaded my last article ‘meal plan for 6-8 months old babies’, few mothers reached out to me and asked for few recipes that I had mentioned there.

So here I am writing all the recipes. I am including even the simplest ones because many new mothers get confused sometimes.

Dal/Dal ka pani

Wash the dal thoroughly and boil in cooker. Over cook the dal so that it gets mashed completely. If the dal has peel (chhilke wali), strain it. If the dal is without peels (dhuli huyi), just mash it properly and feed. Initially, keep the consistency thin.

Gradually, you can start adding few drops of ghee and pinches of condiments (Refer article ‘List of foods that can be given to 6 months old babies’). Do not add salt.

Apple and Pear Puree

You basically have to steam the fruits and mash them well.

Peel the fruit, wash it properly and cut into small pieces. You can then steam the pieces in an idli maker or simply keep in a bowl and put the bowl in the cooker having a little water. Cook until soft, mash with hands and feed.

Carrot and Pumpkin Puree

The puree of carrot and pumpkin is prepared the same way as apple and pear. Only difference is that you will need to cook carrot and pumpkin a little longer.

Sooji kheer

Dry roast sooji (semolina) and store in an air tight container. Use this when needed.

Take this roasted sooji and cook in water. Once cooked properly, take off the flame and allow it to cool a bit. Afterwards, add formula milk or expressed breast milk to add the consistency.

After few days, you can add a pinch of cinnamon in it. Do not add sugar

Rice and dal khichdi

As this is combination of two things, you must be giving khichdi after few days of starting solids, so now you can add ghee.

Put few drops of ghee (better to use home-made ghee) in the pan, add water, rice, dal, and a pinch of turmeric. Cook well. Mash and feed.

Ragi and Carrot/Pumpkin/Apple halwa

Steam and mash the carrot/pumpkin/apple as described earlier.

Now put few drops of ghee in a pan, add ragi powder and roast a bit. Add the puree of carrot/pumpkin/apple and water. Cook well.

Sweet potato

Peel and wash sweet potato. Cut in pieces and boil in cooker with appropriate amount of water. Finally, the sweet potato must be almost dissolved in the water to make a thin consistency puree.

Makhana/Sabudana Kheer

Dry roast makhana/sabudana (In case of sabudana, wash and dry the sabudana beforehand). When cooled, grind it to make a powder and store in an air tight container. Use this to make kheer the same way as sooji kheer. You can add a pinch of cinnamon.

Ragi and Dates halwa

Soak one date in water and allow it to soften completely. Mash or grind it. Make halwa with ragi powder the same way as ragi and carrot/pumpkin halwa.

Arhar dal with Bottle Gourd

Put ghee in cooker. Add very few seeds of cumin (jeera) or carom (ajwain).  Add water, dal, pieces of bottle gourd, and a pinch of turmeric. Cook well and feed. By this time, you might try to feed without mashing (as arhar dal and bottle gourd both are very soft).

Peas puree

Boil the peas with just sufficient water. Once cooked well, grind or mash with hands to feed. It should not be of very thick consistency.

Ragi porridge

Put ghee in pan. Add cumin (jeera) or carom (ajwain). Add water, ragi powder, and a pinch of turmeric. Cook well.

Add cumin/carom/turmeric only if it has been a few days since the baby has started eating solids.

Sabudana with Dates kheer

Put water in a pan and add sabudana powder; cook. Add soaked and mashed date. When cooked, allow it to cool and then add formula milk or breast milk to adjust the consistency.

Ragi porridge with vegetables

In the ragi porridge (as described above), add boiled vegetables of your choice.

Rice with Dates kheer

Same as sabudana  kheer; use rice in place of sabudana powder. Either use rice powder or give a lot of time to let the rice cook thoroughly and mash properly.

Sabudana with anjeer kheer

Soak 1/4th anjeer. Mash when soft. Make kheer with sabudana powder the same way as sabudana with dates kheer.

Sooji with bottle gourd upma

Put ghee in a pan. Add cumin seeds. Add water and roasted sooji. Add previously boiled bottle gourd. Cook.

Pumpkin/Carrot halwa

Steam and mash pumpkin/carrot. Put ghee in a pan. Add pumpkin/carrot puree and roast it well. Add water if needed.

Bottle gourd with Dates halwa

Boil bottle gourd and mash. Put ghee in pan. Add mashed bottle gourd and mashed date. Roast well.

Potato and bottle gourd soup

Peel, wash and chop potato and bottle gourd. Put ghee in pan. Add cumin. Add water, potato, bottle gourd, turmeric and coriander powder. Cook well. Mash everything and feed.
